How this age calculator works

This calculator finds the exact time between two dates, expressed in years, months, and days. It also shows the total elapsed time in days, weeks, and hours — useful for deadlines, anniversaries, and milestones.

The calculation method

We start by subtracting the birth year, month, and day from the target date. If the day difference is negative, we borrow days from the month column (adding the number of days in the birth month). If the month difference is then negative, we borrow from the year column. This is the same borrowing principle used in long subtraction, and it accounts for the fact that calendar months vary in length from 28 to 31 days.

Why not just divide by 365?

Dividing total days by 365.25 gives an approximate age in decimal years, but it doesn't tell you the months-and-days remainder. A person born on March 15 is not exactly the same "age" on March 14 of the next year as someone born on March 15 — the precise method accounts for the calendar structure, not just elapsed time.

Common uses

  • Calculate exact age for forms, licenses, and eligibility
  • Find the time between two historical events
  • Count days until a deadline or milestone
  • Determine age in days for scientific or fitness contexts
