How this tip calculator works
This calculator takes your bill amount, applies a tip percentage, and divides the total among the number of people dining. You pick from common percentages (10–25%) or enter a custom amount. The result shows the tip, the grand total, and each person's share — useful for splitting a check fairly.
The tip math
tip = bill × (percent ÷ 100)
total = bill + tip
per person = total ÷ number of people
Where the percentages come from
- 15% — minimum for adequate table service
- 18% — standard for full sit-down service in most US cities
- 20% — generous, or baseline for great service
- 25%+ — exceptional service, large parties, or small inexpensive checks
Tipping smarter
- Tip on the pre-tax subtotal — sales tax isn't part of the service
- For groups, many restaurants add an automatic 18% gratuity for 6+ guests
- If using a discount or coupon, tip on the original full price
- For takeout, 10% is appreciated but not required
