How this power calculator works

Power measures how quickly energy is used or work is done. This calculator supports two fundamental physics formulas: power as work divided by time, and power as force multiplied by velocity. You can solve for any variable in either equation.

The formulas

Power = Work / Time — P = W / t

Power = Force × Velocity — P = F × v

Where P is power in watts (W), W is work in joules (J), t is time in seconds (s), F is force in newtons (N), and v is velocity in meters per second (m/s).

Common unit conversions

  • 1 watt (W) = 1 joule/second (J/s)
  • 1 kilowatt (kW) = 1,000 W
  • 1 horsepower (hp) = 745.7 W
  • 1 megawatt (MW) = 1,000,000 W

The Work/Time mode is useful for calculating average power output over a known duration. The Force × Velocity mode is useful for mechanical systems — motors, vehicles, lifting — where you know the force applied and the speed of movement.
