How this unit converter works
This unit converter translates a value between units within the same category — Length, Weight, Temperature, or Volume. Pick a category, enter a value, choose the source and target units, and the result updates instantly on every keystroke.
The conversion method
For most categories the converter uses a shared base unit. Each unit has a factor that represents how many base units it equals. To convert from unit A to unit B:
result = value × (factor of A) ÷ (factor of B)
- Length base: meter (m)
- Weight base: gram (g)
- Volume base: liter (l)
For example, converting 5 kilometers to miles: 5 × 1000 ÷ 1609.344 ≈ 3.10686 miles.
Temperature is special
Temperature scales don't share a zero point, so they can't go through a single base unit with a simple factor. Instead the converter applies the direct scale formulas:
- °C → °F: °C × 9⁄5 + 32
- °C → K: °C + 273.15
- °F → °C: (°F − 32) × 5⁄9
- °F → K: (°F − 32) × 5⁄9 + 273.15
- K → °C: K − 273.15
- K → °F: (K − 273.15) × 9⁄5 + 32
Common conversion factors
- 1 inch = 0.0254 meters (exact)
- 1 foot = 0.3048 meters (exact)
- 1 mile = 1609.344 meters (exact)
- 1 pound = 453.59237 grams
- 1 US gallon = 3.78541 liters
- 1 US cup = 0.236588 liters
Tips for accurate conversions
- Use the result's significant figures as a guide — rounding to 6 figures is plenty for almost any practical task.
- For cooking, note that US cups, tablespoons, and teaspoons differ from imperial equivalents.
- Weight and mass are treated equivalently here because the calculator assumes Earth gravity.
- Always confirm whether a recipe uses US or imperial gallons — a US gallon is about 3.785 L while an imperial gallon is 4.546 L.
