The fuel cost formula
Imperial: Cost = (Distance ÷ MPG) × Price per gallon
Metric: Cost = (Distance ÷ 100) × L/100km × Price per liter
Tips to reduce fuel costs
- Maintain proper tire pressure — underinflated tires cut MPG by 0.3% per 1 psi
- Remove excess weight — 100 lbs of cargo reduces MPG by ~1%
- Drive at 50-60 mph on highways — aerodynamic drag rises exponentially above 60
- Avoid idling — 10 minutes of idling wastes about 0.1 gallons
